Former Party chief of Guizhou stands trial for bribery

TIANJIN, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) — Sun Zhigang, former secretary of the Communist Party of China Guizhou Provincial Committee, stood trial for graft at the No. 2 Intermediate People’s Court of Tianjin in north China on Wednesday.
Sun, also formerly a deputy head of the Financial and Economic Affairs Committee of the National People’s Congress, was indicted for accepting bribes worth 813 million yuan (about 113.87 million U.S. dollars), according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors accused Sun of taking undue advantage of his various positions from 2002 to 2023 to assist individuals and organizations in matters concerning advancing business projects, purchasing stock shares, obtaining contracts and real estate development.
At the trial, prosecutors presented evidence and the defendant and his lawyers examined it. The two sides gave their respective accounts, according to a court statement.
Sun pleaded guilty and expressed remorse in his final statement.
